Kuala Lumpur, 4 June 2025 – The Liver Transplant Workshop, orchestrated by the Paediatric Surgery Department of Hospital Tunku Azizah (HTA) with the esteemed support of the Malaysia Association of Paediatric Surgery (MAPS) and the Malaysian Society of Transplant (MTS), was successfully held from 3 to 4 June. This workshop was conceived by Dr. Fitri, who had recently returned from an enriching attachment in the field of liver transplantation in Malatya, Turkiye. He brought along a distinguished team of transplant surgeons from Inonu University, where he dedicated six months to advancing his expertise, to share their techniques and experiences in conducting liver transplants.
The team, comprised of eminent surgeons from Inonu University, led by Prof. Dr. Sezai Yilmaz, alongside HTA’s paediatric surgeons, anesthetists, gastroenterologists, paediatric intensivists, and nursing staff, was thoroughly briefed on the clinical histories and investigations of both the recipient and donor, as well as the procedural workflow of the transplant, a day prior to the workshop.
A live surgical demonstration was conducted, broadcasted to an audience in the HTA auditorium, where Dato Zakaria, a retired senior paediatric surgeon, facilitated and provided commentary on the procedures. Attendees were afforded the opportunity to listen to insights from the surgeons from Inonu University and pose inquiries. The donor surgery commenced at approximately 8 am, concluding with the transplant around 9 pm.
The following day featured a comprehensive seminar with esteemed speakers from Turkiye. The intricacies of the performed case were meticulously discussed, and various topics concerning techniques and strategies for managing complications were presented.
