Paediatric Surgery’s 20th Conjoint Twin Separation
Kuala Lumpur, 24 June 2025 – The Paediatric Surgery Department of Hospital Tunku Azizah (HTA) performed its 20th conjoint twin separation since 1987. The abdomino-ischipagus, tetrapus conjoint twins were first diagnosed antenatally and was delivered in HTA. The planning and execution of the separation required multidisciplinary efforts by paediatric surgery, paediatric anesthesiology, and radiology. The separation would not have been possible without seamless coordination with the anesthetic team as the surgery not only demands complex surgical maneuvers but also difficult anesthetic considerations and optimal positioning for adequate surgical field exposure. The surgery started at 9am, concluding at 10pm. The surgery marks yet another milestone in paediatric surgical services in Malaysia. All prayers goes towards the safety of the babies post-operatively and may they grow into healthy and productive individuals.
