Cyberjaya, 19 JULY 2025 – The Medical Student Undergraduate Society (MUGS) of the University of Cyberjaya orchestrated the Precision in Practice: SurgMed Summit 2025, extending invitations to medical students from diverse institutions across the nation, alongside several distinguished speakers.

I had the privilege of representing MAPS at this esteemed conference, where I engaged with forums addressing two pressing issues within the Malaysian healthcare landscape: the crisis of healthcare workforce shortages and the optimal duration of housemanship training. Esteemed representatives from the Ministry of Health deliberated on these challenges, offering insights and recommendations on how to navigate them, including the obstacles that prospective housemen may encounter and strategies for overcoming such hurdles. Subsequently, various stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, the private sector, and academia engaged in a discourse regarding the merits and drawbacks of a one versus two-year housemanship. Some speakers, having undergone a one-year housemanship, shared their experiences, demonstrating that success in the medical field is attainable regardless of the duration of training. The discussions underscored the maturity of students, who are increasingly aware of the pressing medical issues confronting the nation.

The latter portion of the summit took on a more convivial tone, featuring medical professionals from the armed forces, including representatives from the Malaysian Royal Army, Navy, and Airforce. Their narratives were not only enlightening but also profoundly inspiring, illustrating that the realm of medicine extends far beyond the confines of traditional hospital settings.

In the afternoon and on the subsequent day, medical students participated in practical, hands-on sessions covering a range of medical procedures, including bowel anastomosis, lumbar puncture, orthopedic fracture management, and endotracheal intubation.

The summit was remarkably well-executed, showcasing the exemplary organizational skills of the medical students involved. Fostering further collaborations among students will not only enhance their preparedness for future careers but also equip them to emerge as leaders within the medical fraternity.
