Bridging Hope and Building Surgical Skills: The 2026 AMSEP Paediatric Workshop

Sungai Long, 19 July 2026 — The Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman Surgical Society (USS), in collaboration with the Asian Medical Students’ Exchange Program (AMSEP) and InciSioN Malaysia, successfully organized a hands-on Paediatric Workshop at the UTAR Sungai Long Campus.

Themed “Tiny Patients, Big Precision,” the one-day intensive session ran from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and served as an immersive, intermediate-level symposium designed to bridge the gap between preclinical theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical application. A core focus of the event was the AMSEP medical student exchange program, which proudly hosted visiting Indonesian medical students from various universities across their country, alongside local USS and InciSioN members.

The educational programme featured an engaging rotating station model covering multiple specialized topics. Serving as a facilitator for the paediatric circumcision station, I had the distinct privilege of guiding these visiting delegates. The session commenced with a short, high-yield lecture focusing on the fundamental principles and potential complications of paediatric circumcision. This addressed crucial clinical decision-making elements and procedural indications, equipping participants with the cognitive framework necessary for safe paediatric surgical care.

A major highlight of our station was the innovative hands-on simulation that allowed students to transition theory into practice. To simulate a real circumcision, we utilized a highly creative DIY model. Credit for this ingenious idea goes entirely to the medical students themselves, who proposed employing fresh carrots to represent the base anatomical structure of the penis, innovatively combined with condoms to accurately replicate the prepuce. This highly effective, zero-risk, student-led simulation model allowed the delegates to actively practice their incisions, dexterity, and standard dorsal slit method.

This collaborative initiative not only advanced global surgery education but also provided a vital platform to strengthen regional networks and foster meaningful connections between Malaysian and Indonesian future healthcare professionals.
