Sepeda Amal Borneo 2026 & SAB Child Health Symposium Copy

Miri, 31 July 2026 — The Malaysian Association of Paediatric Surgery (MAPS), in conjunction with Sepeda Amal Borneo (SAB) 2026, successfully organized the SAB Child Health Symposium 2026 at the Pullman Hotel, Miri, Sarawak. The symposium coincided with the triumphant conclusion of the grueling 680km SAB charity cycling event from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to Miri, Sarawak, which was remarkably completed by Muhammad and a team of dedicated cyclists.

Themed “Bridging Hope, Building Futures for Children,” the symposium ran from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and targeted a diverse group of healthcare professionals from both government and private sectors, including medical officers, specialists, paediatricians, nurses, and allied health personnel.

The educational programme featured an engaging lineup of esteemed MAPS speakers. Paediatric Surgeon Mr John Emmanuel delivered the opening remarks and later presented on foreign body ingestion in children. MAPS President Prof Shireen Anne Nah provided a comprehensive overview of the disease burden in paediatric surgery, while Mr Koay Yeang Wee addressed common urological diseases in children. Further specialized topics were covered by Dr Muniswaran Nadesin, who spoke on minimally invasive surgery (MIS), and Abhirrami Lechmiannandan, who discussed common penoscrotal disorders in children.

This dual-initiative aimed to introduce and promote awareness regarding primary immunodeficiencies (PID) and paediatric conditions requiring specialized surgical care. Demonstrating immense solidarity, 100% of the symposium’s registration proceeds will be donated to support children requiring surgery and treatment for PID.

A major highlight of the campaign is the astounding fundraising success of the charity ride. To date, the event has raised an impressive RM 200,000. These proceeds will be split 60/40 between MAPS and MyPOPI (Persatuan Pesakit Imunodefisiensi Primer Malaysia). In accordance with the Terms of Reference, the MAPS portion of the funds will be dedicated exclusively to public programmes designed to support patients and their families throughout their childhood.

The successful completion of the cycling challenge and the symposium not only reflects MAPS’s ongoing commitment to delivering quality healthcare advocacy but also provides a vital platform to foster community support and meaningful connections.
